FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR
Inside Out Ottawa-Gatineau Returns
By Jason St-Laurent, Director of Programming
Join us from November 20 to 22 for the third edition of the Inside Out Ottawa-Gatineau LGBT Film and Video Festival. The National Gallery of Canada will radiate in pink with vibrant queer cinema from around the world, under the theme of Love! Drama! Sex! Politics!
Opening Night will feature two gala screenings: the jaw-dropping comedy Drool, featuring Mullholland Drive's Laura Harring, and the international sensation Patrik, Age 1.5 from Sweden. But the fun doesn't stop there: Chef's Special from Spain is a gut-busting good time, An Englishman in New York is a star-studded celebration of a beloved queer icon and I Can't Think Straight proves that entertainment and politics can make good bedfellows. On closing night, we tip our hats (and raise a few glasses) to sexual diversity with Gender Bender at SAW Gallery, which will coincide with the closing of the exhibition of dyke powerhouse artist Allyson Mitchell.

When new boy in town Casey falls for the smoldering Zack, he enlists local slut Tiffani to help land his man. The pair create a fake online profile for Casey using pictures of Tiffani's studly stripper ex, Ryan to lure Zack in. Everything goes according to plan until the real Ryan shows up. What follows is a raunchy comedy of errors as Casey tries to hang onto the man of his dreams.
A fresh cast of hot (and ripped!) openly gay newcomers and a couple of franchise favourites are joined by gay icons Mink Stole and Leslie Jordan (Sordid Lives, Will and Grace).

Upon their return home from a North African vacation, Italian lesbian couple Anna and Mara discover that they've inadvertently smuggled home with them Anis, a Morrocan stowaway. The idyllic sense of family is short-lived. Anis struggles to comprehend the lifestyle and values embraced by Anna and Mara as the couple is compelled to deal with familial disapproval, factory cutbacks and the death of a family member. Fruit Fly by H.P. Mendoza USA, 2009, 94 min, English & Tagalog with English subtitles Director in Attendance!
Thursday, November 12 at Innis Town Hall (2 Sussex Ave.) at 7:30pm Tickets: Inside Out members $10/ Regular $12
The team that brought you the surprise indie hit Colma: The Musical (Reel Asian and Inside Out, 2006) has returned with another raucous and raunchy musical, Fruit Fly. In this go-round, Colma's naive teen angst has given way to 20s malaise—that dark, moody place where life has seemingly left you with nothing but lovers you hate, friends you hardly know and text messages you don't remember sending. Fruit Fly follows Bethesda, a Filipino adoptee and performance artist who moves to San Francisco to workshop and perform her show about the search for her birth parents. She finds herself moving into a commune of transient artists who help her navigate the art scene of her new home and quickly anoint her the unwanted label of "fag hag."
Writer/director H.P. Mendoza (who also wrote and starred in Colma) has penned an epic 19-song soundtrack of pandemically catchy synth-pop/electro/house/showtune numbers that take us along Bethesda's adventures through San Francisco's public transit, gay clubs, fringe theatres and morning-after regrets. Songs like "Fag Hag," "We Are the Hag" and "We Have So Much in Common" are sure to bring the house down and make a censor's ears bleed!
