FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR

An Anniversary to Remember

Well, the curtain has come down on our 20th anniversary edition of the Toronto LGBT Film and Video Festival and it was one that will remain in my memory for many years to come.

We had more international guests attend Inside Out than in previous years and their warmth and kind words about our hospitality and professionalism was amazing to hear. For me, there is nothing better than hearing our guests tell us what a world-class festival we present. Guests came from all over North America and Europe and shared their experiences making their films with enthusiastic audiences. It truly made all of our Gala presentations extra special to have guests in attendance and I want to personally thank Rob Epstein and Jeffery Friedman (Howl), Javier Fuentes Leon (Undertow), Greta Olafsdottir and Susan Muska (Edie and Thea: A Very Long Engagement) and Maxine Peake (The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister) for their support and kind words as well as all the rest of our local and international guests.

As you heard me say many times from the stage, a HUGE thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, RBC Royal Bank, and our other important sponsors, funders, advertisers and community partners for their commitment to the Festival and providing the financial support for us to make our 20th anniversary celebrations memorable! Thanks as well, to you, our members, donors and ticket buyers for coming out and helping us present more than 15 sold-out screenings and for the positive feedback on the Festival programming.

An additional round of applause for our generous sponsors who helped us create wonderful Gift Bags for our out of town guests; AIDS Committee of Toronto, Baskin Robbins on Church Street, Buddha Body Yoga, Church Wellesley Village BIA, Dan Cap, GotStyle, RBC Royal Bank, Trinity Square Video, Urban Source and Vivek Shraya.

Finally, thanks to all of our amazing volunteers for working so hard, as well as to the staff and Board of Directors of Inside Out for their dedication to the Festival and their positive energy.

We're already planning for our official entry into adulthood, with the 21st edition scheduled for May 19-29, 2011.

See you in the dark.
Scott Ferguson
Executive Director

Reflecting on a Great Festival

For our 20th anniversary festival, we really wanted to evoke a sense of history in our programming. We opened with an innovative biopic of Allen Ginsberg and closed with a portrait of lesbian renegade Anne Lister. In between, we tipped our hats to important films from the past 20 years in our Flashback Series with many directors in town to chat with the audience, including the very charming Cheryl Dunye and the Oscar-winning Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. I was so thrilled to hang out with such iconic figures from queer cinema and I'll never forget my 'date' with British actress Maxine Peake. Filmmakers and artists have always been at the core of Inside Out and hearing their stories first-hand is definitely one of the best parts of my job.

I'm looking forward to doing it all again next year.

Director of Programming
