FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR
I Left My Heart (and a few other things) in San Francisco
My annual sojourn to San Francisco for the Frameline San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival is always a personal highlight of my work year. The largest LGBT film festival in the world, Frameline is always an amazing, unique experience every time I attend.
Frameline itself is a rather odd beast. No other LGBT festival can attract 1200 people to an 11 am Saturday screening of short films. The Festival's audiences as well are a very engaged and passionate bunch who never fail to surprise me with the questions they ask during post-screening Q&As - one audience member asked British director Rickie Beadle Blair why he didn't subtitle his English language film!
I did see some great films that hopefully we will bring you next year for the Toronto Festival including Sasha, Bear City and Elena Undone. My personal favourite was a work-in-progress screening of the documentary We Were Here: Voices From the AIDS Years in San Francisco. The film was an intensely powerful examination of the AIDS crisis over the past three decades as told through the personal stories of five San Franciscans whose lives were and continue to be impacted by the disease.
One of the best parts of the trip is always reconnecting with colleagues from festivals around the world and seeing new friends who attended our Festival a month earlier. It was great to spend quality time with Maxine Peake (from The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister) at a live concert by the Topp Twins. As well, other Inside Out guests that made the trip to San Francisco included Morris and Bob from Beyond Gay, Kareem Mortimer from Children of God, Javier Fuentes Leon, director of our Centrepiece Gala Undertow, Marja Lewis Ryan and Dan Carlisle from The Four-Faced Liar who brought along the rest of their equally lovely co-stars, and dozens of other Festival friends who only made my ten days in the City by the Bay more memorable.
See you next time at the movies! Scott Ferguson Executive Director
